YEOVIL NEWS: Town to receive nearly £10m in Government funding

YEOVIL has been named as one of the winners of Government funding to help regenerate the high street and is set to receive over £9.7million.

In a major boost for local high streets, up to £830 million from the Future High Streets Fund will be invested in 72 areas across England, Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick announced on Boxing Day (Saturday, December 26, 2020).

The funding will help these areas transform their high streets into vibrant hubs for future generations and to protect and create thousands of jobs in a range of industries, delivering opportunities and prosperity to communities across England.

Yeovil has been awarded a provisional funding of £9,756,897.

Local MP Marcus Fysh has been lobbying for Yeovil to be included and has welcomed the news.

“This is a wonderful Christmas present for Yeovil,” he said. “I pushed hard for the creation of the Government’s new Future High Streets Fund and to get Yeovil’s town centre regeneration scheme to be part of it.

“It is superb that almost all of the application amount has been awarded at nearly £10 million. We knew we were being considered after making the short list but this confirmation of more than what some were saying might be possible is just the boost the town needs to help bring forward projects like the Cattle Market and make the town centre more of a destination.

“We have had such a hard time with Covid-19 and the closure of some key retailers there couldn’t be a better moment for this backing of the town to come.”

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, added: “The Future High Streets Fund will help areas bounce back through regeneration projects that level up opportunities and create jobs right across the country.”
