YEOVIL NEWS: Olivia wins seat on town council
YEOVIL Town Council has co-opted Olivia Darling-Finan as its newest councillor.
Cllr Darling-Finan, of the Labour Party, was victorious in a one-on-one vote with Conservative candidate Michael Beales to represent the Yeovil College ward on the council.
A third candidate, Robert Wood, of The Green Party, withdrew from the application process.
Cllr Darling-Finan, 23, a former Buckler’s Mead Academy student, is already a member of Brympton Parish Council.
But she is looking forward to getting on with the job as a new member of Yeovil Town Council.
“I do feel over the last few years that I have made a real effort to get involved with the community,” she said. “I’d like to be a voice for the younger generation.
“Although I’m 23 I do feel as if I have got an old head on my shoulders.”
A vote was taken during the town council’s meeting on August 4 which was held via the Zoom conferencing technology.
Cllr Darling-Finan recorded 16 votes, while Mr Beales received one vote and there were two abstentions.
“I’m absolutely ecstatic and can’t wait to get started and make a difference,” said the new councillor later on social media.
There was, strangely, no candidate in the election for the Liberal Democrats – the ruling group on the town council.
