YEOVIL NEWS: Amazing! Work starts on new £945,000 Westfield community centre

CONSTRUCTION work has begun on the new and modern community centre on the Westfield estate in Yeovil.

Work began on Monday (January 21, 2019) to demolish the existing and old centre which has served the Westfield community since 1964.

Sat on the site of St Peter’s Hall on Coronation Avenue, the new centre will be built twice the size of the existing hall and include additional meeting spaces, better facilities and a pop-up café area for the location community and businesses to come together.

The new community centre comes as part of a collaborative project between St Peter’s Church, Westfield Community Association, Yarlington Housing Group and South Somerset District Council. Over the last year, the project group have raised £927,500 towards a project cost of £945,000 through fundraising and grants to deliver the centre.

On the community centre, Rev. David Keen, chairman of the project group, said: “This new community centre is a chance to provide something brilliant to Westfield and is a great example of what can happen when the church and community work together.”

Following an extensive tendering process, the project group selected Hammond Building Contractors to undertake the works.

Ben Hobley, contracts director for Hammonds, said:  “Hammonds are delighted to have been awarded the St Peter's Community Centre building contract and look forward to working with Revd Keen and his team in providing a valuable community resource.

“Hammonds carry out a wide range of building projects locally from our base in Sturminster Newton.”

The project team would also like to take the opportunity to thank supportive organisations: The National Lottery, Yarlington Housing Group, South Somerset District Council, Viridor, Yeovil Town Council, Yeovil Without Parish Council, Garfield Weston Foundation, Clarks Shoes, Trusthouse Foundation, Bath and Wells Diocese, Abbey Manor Charitable Trust, Battens, Bernard Sunley Foundation, Fairfield Trust, Wakeleys, Rivetts, Yeovil Stroke Club, Westfield Co-op, Somerset Community Foundation, and many local churches, groups and individuals that have pledged.

Work on the new community centre is expected to be complete by the end of 2019.
