YEOVIL NEWS: It’s gold for Yeovil – bloomin’ marvellous!

THE Yeovil in Bloom group has scooped a Gold award once again in the annual South West in Bloom competition.

The group was also awarded the special Abiss Memorial Trophy for the best horticultural municipal display in the South West for St John’s Churchyard.

The Yeovil entry was rewarded in recognition of its excellent floral displays and community involvement initiatives.

There were also awards won across the town with Westfield Community Association, Yeovil Junction Station and Friends of Yeovil Station all receiving Thriving Neighbourhood awards.

There were even more awards won across the South Somerset District Council area with Curry Rivel winning the Gold award for their category as well as the Michael McGahey trophy for Exceptional community effort and also the joint winners of the Outstanding effort competition. Milborne Port also won a Gold award for their category as well as picking up an Advancing Neighbourhood award for the Pub Brook Group.

Ash received the Silver Gilt in their category and picked up a Thriving Neighbourhood award and were also Runner up for Art in the Landscape. Crewkerne picked up two Thriving Neighbourhood awards, Haselbury Plucknett a Silver Gilt and Best New Entry award, Templecombe won a Silver Gilt and Outstanding Neighbourhood award, whilst Wincanton C.A.T.C.H won an Outstanding Neighbourhood award.

Manny Roper, chairman of the Yeovil in Bloom Steering Group, said: “What an achievement for Yeovil and the whole of South Somerset, with many of the towns and villages across the district picking up lots of awards.

“We are extremely proud to win the Abiss Memorial Trophy because a lot of hard work went into creating the display at St John’s Churchyard.

We must thank all those who helped. It’s been a really difficult summer with the heat we have had, so to continue to make the floral displays look amazing and keep the streets clean and tidy was a massive challenge that has been embraced by South Somerset District Council’s environmental services team.

“We must also thank the people of Yeovil who really get behind In Bloom each year, endorsing what we do and supporting the floral displays on show.”

Cllr David Recardo, Mayor of Yeovil, added, “I was delighted to host the South West In Bloom Presentations at Westlands on Thursday (October 4, 2018).

“It was a complete surprise to win two awards, of course we always hope for Gold, but you never know as the judges may see things we don’t, but to pick up the trophy for the “Best Horticultural Display” municipal, was amazing and what made it even more special, I got to present it to our team.

“Personally as Mayor of Yeovil, I would like to thank everyone who contributed, for their hard work our valued sponsors and all our gardeners around the town. Congratulations everyone.”

The Yeovil in Bloom initiative is managed and funded by Yeovil Town Council and delivered with the support of South Somerset District Council.
