YEOVIL NEWS: Mini-roundabout plans for Asda store entrance on Preston Road

A MINI-ROUNDABOUT will be installed on Preston Road in Yeovil next week as a trial while work on the Western Corridor scheme continues.

The Western Corridor scheme is a multi-million pound package of improvements by Somerset County Council to increase the capacity of several junctions and upgrade links for pedestrians and cyclists. It will also support the delivery of more than 1,500 homes and 20 hectares of employment land nearby.

Contractor Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd will shortly be starting work to widen Preston Road between the Asda entrance and the Preston Road Roundabout and build a retaining wall. This requires the permanent traffic lights at the Asda junction to be switched off.

Rather than using temporary multi-way traffic lights it is proposed to install a mini-roundabout on a trial basis. If successful, this arrangement will remain until the work is complete. If not successful, temporary traffic lights will be required.

Cllr John Woodman, Somerset County Council’s spokesman for highways, said: “We’re committed to listening to the public and doing everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum.

“Therefore, I’m pleased our contractor has taken on board comments received in the past and is looking at alternative approaches to traffic management.

“We know this is a very busy junction and will be looking closely at how the mini-roundabout operates during this trial before making a decision on how best to complete this important section of work.”
