HEALTH: Anxiety in children – better breathing technique could help

WORKSHOPS are being held next month in Yeovil for those young people who struggle with anxiety issues which could be solved by proper breathing techniques.

Accredited practitioner Elaine Stafford, of the Buteyko Clinic based at the Ninesprings Centre in Yeovil, has said that by breathing properly can prove to be an “extremely effective” way of easing anxiety in children.

“So many young people are struggling with anxiety,” she said. “I have put together a day of workshops working with various age groups.

“Places will be limited as I would like to work as a group and individually during the workshop which will each last for about 90 minutes.”HEALTH: Anxiety in children – better breathing technique could help

The workshops will take place on Saturday, April 7, 2018, from 10am to 11.30am for five to eight-year-olds; midday to 1.30pm for nine to 12-year-olds; and from 2pm to 3.30pm for young people aged 13 to 18.

Elaine added: “Your child will learn ‘good breathing’, how to relieve stress that actually causes us to over breathe, we will learn slow, quiet, calm breathing which will lower our body’s fear response, and identify how to control our breathing during early stages of panic attacks.”

The workshop will cost £30 per child and they must be accompanied free of charge by an adult.

During the workshop the Buteyko Method will be explained and children will work on some effective exercises that they will be able to use in everyday life.

“Please do contact me for more information if you are interested,” added Elaine.

The Buteyko Breathing technique is a form of complementary or alternative physical therapy that proposes the use of breathing exercises primarily as a treatment for asthma and other respiratory conditions.

The method takes its name from Ukrainian doctor Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko who first formulated its principles during the 1950s.

This method is based on the assumption that numerous medical conditions, including asthma, are caused by chronically increased respiratory rate or deeper breathing.
