YEOVIL NEWS: Official opening of Primrose Lane Primary School

STAFF and pupils at Yeovil’s newest primary school had a day to remember as dignitaries from Somerset County Council joined them for its official launch.

Primrose Lane Primary School opened its doors in the summer, following the recent completion of a £4.2m, eight-classroom project - including a nursey - built to meet Yeovil’s growing demand for school places.

And on Tuesday (January 16, 2018) leader of Somerset County Council, Cllr David Fothergill, carried out the official opening of the state-of-the-art facility – helped by pupils who held the primrose-coloured ribbon for him to cut.

“This is a fantastic new facility and a great place for local children to learn,” he said. “I’m delighted that we continue to invest in our children’s education in Somerset, which is so important to all of us.”

The pupils were the stars of the day – clearly having blossomed in their new surroundings. During the official opening ceremony children sang and delivered speeches on what they like about their new school.

Standing at the top of the new Wyndham Park housing estate in Yeovil, the school has seven classrooms linked by a huge open-plan space known as ‘the lane’, an impressive hall, offices, a kitchen, and lots of green outdoor space.

From some of the windows there are views which stretch to Glastonbury Tor and beyond.

The school is part of the part of the Huish Multi Academy Trust and has been built by Willmott Dixon.

Executive head of the Huish Academy Trust, Pauline Price said: “We’re immensely proud of Primrose Lane Primary School, a wonderful facility which offers an amazing educational experience for each and every child.”

The school currently has 52 pupils, and there are a further 29 in the pre-school unit. It will eventually cater for a roll of 210 pupils.

Last financial year Somerset County Council invested more than £16m building and maintaining schools in the county, including £2.8m towards Primrose Lane.

Neal Stephens, managing director of Willmott Dixon said: “It has been a pleasure working with Somerset County Council to deliver Primrose Lane primary school.

“We built the school in record time, just six months from our initial engagement.

“During this construction period we engaged the local community to become part of the neighbourhood.

“We hope the staff, pupils and teachers enjoy their new learning facility, which is now the heart of this new residential area.”

By May this year, Kingfisher Primary on the other side of Yeovil at Brympton should also be complete, providing an additional 14 classes and another nursery for Yeovil. The development will also include a community building as part of the commitment from the housing developer.
