YEOVIL NEWS: Firefighters to carry out road smash exercise

FIRE crews will be carrying out a road traffic collision exercise in Yeovil on Tuesday (September 5, 2017) evening.

The exercise will be held in Bunford Lane to provide a realistic and challenging RTC scenario for responding crews, involving multiple vehicles, trapped casualties and walking wounded.

Fire engines will be attending from Yeovil, Ilminster, Chard and Wincanton and they will be joined by a Command Unit from Street.

Participants from other emergency services are also expected to attend including a crew from Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. Casualty Union volunteers will be the ‘injured’ people involved, some of which may need to be extricated from the vehicles involved.

Exercise organiser Watch Manager Ian Balfour, of Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Unfortunately our crews do have to attend road traffic collisions on a regular basis and often have to take action quickly and professionally to rescue people from their vehicles.

“This exercise will enable us to practice our techniques in a safe environment and it’s always useful to learn more about how we work in certain situations.”
