YEOVIL NEWS: Chain gang gather for Mayor’s civic service

THE Mayor of Yeovil, Cllr Darren Shutler, held his civic service where dignitaries from around the region converged on the town.

Cllr Shutler, who is at the start of his second year as Mayor, was delighted to welcome fellow members of the “chain gang” – in reference to those who wear chains of office – to Yeovil.

They gathered at the Town House, headquarters of Yeovil Town Council, and then paraded to St John’s Church for a civic service.YEOVIL NEWS: Chain gang gather for Mayor’s civic service

Pre-service music was provided by the Phoenix Voices ahead of the Mayoral civic procession arriving at the church led by three pipers.

The service was led by Rev James Dudley-Smith with bible readings from Cllr Shutler and the Deputy Mayor of Yeovil, Cllr David Recardo.

Saxophonist Hannah Woolmington, the Mayor’s niece,  played music from The Pirates of the Caribbean and the classic Louis Armstrong sound It’s a Wonderful World.

There was another fantastic performance from talented singer Cllr Sarah Lowery, who herself is a member of Yeovil Town Council.

The Phoenix Voices choir again performed, while there was music by the Salvation Army Band.

The address was made by the Mayor’s chaplain, Rev Jim Pearce.

A collection was made on behalf of the Mayor’s chosen charities – School in a Bag and the St Margaret’s Somerset Hospice.

A reception was held following the service at Home Farm in Chilthorne Domer – headquarters of the School in a Bag charity.
