YEOVIL NEWS: Tesco backs Community Sports Trust language programme in Yeovil

A SCHEME which encourages children from across Yeovil to learn a new language has received a £2,000 boost from the town’s Tesco Extra store.

The store on Queensway in Huish is backing Yeovil Town Community Sports Trust’s Language Programme, Soccerlinguistics.

The community trust uses Yeovil Town Football Club and football-related resources to deliver the programme within six local primary schools. The money donated by the Yeovil Tesco Extra store will enable them to fund the delivery in another local primary school.

Tesco Extra store manager Stuart Edginton visited Yeovil Town’s Huish Park stadium to present the money to Community Sports Trust manager Sara Bradley.

The store made the donation as part of its commitment to support local community groups and good causes.

Mr Edginton said: “Learning a language helps to build relationships between everyone who lives in the area, as well as helping to promote mutual understanding between young people from different social, religious and ethnic backgrounds.

“The Trust is doing some fantastic work in this area and we are happy to be able to support it in this way.”

Yeovil Town Community Sports Trust recently received funding from the Big Lottery Fund to deliver the language programme.

Polish is now the most common non-UK ethnicity in all Somerset districts and Polish born residents now account for 1% of the region’s overall population. In the past the Trust has offered French, Spanish and Italian language lessons, but it is now offering Polish too in a bid to enhance community cohesion.

Community Sports Trust manager Sara Bradley said: “The demand for the programme has been extremely high. I would therefore like to use the money kindly donated by the Tesco Extra Yeovil store to enable us to fund the delivery in another local primary school.

“This will mean that with the money received from the Big Lottery Fund, along with the kind donation from Tesco, a total of 210 local children would have benefitted from the programme.”
