GLOVERS NEWS: Yeovil Town still not safe

YEOVIL Town will have to wait another day to make sure of League Two survival for another season after going down 4-2 at Grimsby on Saturday (April 22, 2017).

A win for Newport County put themselves out of the bottom two to mean that the Glovers still need one point to be mathematically certain of safety with Hartlepool United, now in 23rd, the team now looking like joining Leyton Orient as the second relegated team.

A penalty on six minutes by Sam Jones gave Grimsby, now managed by former Yeovil boss Russell Slade, an early lead and this was doubled on 36 minutes through Chris Clements.

Yeovil reduced the deficit shortly after the start of the second period through Alex Lawless, but Grimsby restored their two-goal advantage on 59 minutes through Scott Vernon.

Jamey Osborne made it 4-1 to Grimsby moments later before Francois Zoko got one back for the Glovers with 15 minutes of the match to go.

It was a disappointing defensive display from the Glovers and manager Darren Way later apologised to the 101 travelling Yeovil fans for his side’s poor defending which he described as “abysmal.”

Yeovil could secure League Two safety on Saturday (April 29, 2017) when they play host to Stevenage Borough at Huish Park in a 3pm kick-off.

The final game of the season is on Saturday, May 6, 2017, when the Glovers visit Colchester United in a 5.30pm kick-off.
