GLOVERS FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Kingstonian 3, Yeovil Town 4 - April 7, 2001

WELCOME to the Glovers Flashback Friday feature where we look back at a Yeovil Town game on this day in history from down the years.

In this game we go back 16 years to a Nationwide Conference game and an amazing 4-3 win at Kingstonian which helped to keep alive Yeovil’s hopes of winning the championship.

Second-half goals from Howard Forinton, Warren Patmore, an own goal and a second goal for Patmore in injury time secured a memorable win for the Glovers.

The win was even more remarkable considering Kingstonian had led the Glovers on three times with goals from Gavin Holligan, Derek Allan and Ronnie Green.

Holligan gave Kingstonian a first-half lead, but Forinton equalised for the Glovers on 52 minutes when he netted after an initial effort by Patmore had come back off the bar.

But Kingstonian responded and regained the lead through Allan and worse was to follow for Yeovil when Forinton was stretchered off with a bad injury.

Yeovil regrouped and drew level on 70 minutes at 2-2 when Patmore scored his first of the afternoon with an impressive flying header.

Again it looked as if Yeovil would take control, but again Kingstonian rallied and again took the lead for 3-2 when Green scored.GLOVERS FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Kingstonian 3, Yeovil Town 4 - April 7, 2001 Photo 1

Six minutes went by before Yeovil drew level for a third time on 80 minutes when a corner from Michael McIndoe, who had come on as a sub for Forinton, hit Eddie Akuamoah and ended up in the back of the net as an OG.

The game looked to be heading for a draw but with over five minutes of stopped time due to Forinton’s injury anything could happen – and so it did!

Nick Crittenden crossed from the right, Barrington Belgrave attempted an overhead kick and the ball fell to Patmore who scored to give Yeovil a 4-3 success.

It was an amazing afternoon for the large contingent of travelling supporters and those at the game may remember that – for some strange reason – a pair of discarded underpants laid at the foot of a goalpost for the majority of the match.

The Kingstonian side that day included the prized double act of Geoff Pitcher and Gary Patterson, although the latter of those two had a quiet game. Also, in goal for Kingstonian, was Jimmy Glass – best remembered for scoring a dramatic late goal for Carlisle United a few years before to maintain their place in the Football League.

It gave Yeovil hope that they would go on to win the Conference that season, but in the end their title bid faltered and they finished runners-up behind champions Rushden and Diamonds.

Highest appearance makers during the 2000-01 season for Yeovil were Nick Crittenden with 54, Darren Way with 51 and Barrington Belgrave and Tony Pennock with 50, while David Piper made 48.

Warren Patmore topped the goal scoring chart for Yeovil during the season with 22, while Darren Way chipped in with 12 and Barrington Belgrave hit ten. James Bent and Nick Crittenden scored seven apiece.
