LEISURE: Audiences will be gripped by Yeovil Amateur Operatic Society's new show

YEOVIL Amateur Operatic Society will be wowing audiences with another superb show at the Octagon Theatre over the next fortnight.

The thought-provoking, moving, harrowingly shocking musical Jesus Christ Superstar – from the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice partnership – will be performed at the Octagon from Tuesday (March 28, 2017) through to Saturday, April 8, 2017.

The Yeovil Press went along to the full dress rehearsal run-through on Monday (March 27, 2017) and we can categorically say – without any question – that the audience will be entranced in the show from the first minute to the last.

It simply is a stunning show and although everyone should know the story of Jesus and his final days leading up to his crucifixion – YAOS will bring it to life in dance, music, song and drama.

The musical has no spoken dialogue and it is testament to the YAOS members that spoken dialogue is not needed for the audience to follow the action.

To use a football cliché the YAOS group has a “squad with strength in depth” and the calibre of performer is far from amateur.

Special attention is paid to the relationship between Judas Iscariot and Jesus, as well as Jesus’ relationship with Mary Magdalene.

It focuses on both Judas’ struggle to make the decision to betray Jesus and Jesus’ human psychology, fear, and anger in understanding and accepting his role as both leader and martyr.

The three lead roles perfectly complement each other and the on-stage chemistry between Nick Harris (Jesus), Luke Whitchurch (Judas) and Poppy Rendell (Mary Magdalene) is immense.

But it takes more than just three to make a show and the whole cast will ensure that YAOS’ Jesus Christ Superstar will be remembered for many a year.

Other notable performances will come from Paul Graham as Pontious Pilate and Duncan Wright as King Herod, along with Richard Walters as Caiaphas.

It will be a fantastic show and the Yeovil Press cannot impress enough on people to make sure they try and get along to the Octagon to watch it.

The show is being directed by the excellent Jeremy Tustin and the musical director is Gill Merrifield.
