YEOVIL NEWS: “I couldn’t help a lady who died – she was already dead I think,” says former Yeovil student

A FORMER Yeovil student has spoken of the horror as he watched the terrifying events unfold in Wednesday’s (March 22, 2017) terror attack in the heart of London – including how he “could not help save” one woman who died in the atrocity.

Phil Harris, who went to Preston School in Yeovil from 1978-83, has been working in London for the past 17 years and was on Westminster Bridge when a Hyundai car mowed down several passengers before crashing into railings.

The driver was then reported to have run through the gates of the Palace of Westminster and stabbed a police officer. It is believed he was then shot by police as he moved towards a second officer clutching his knife.

Phil, 49, said: “I was on Westminster Bridge when I thought I saw a road traffic accident, but the car was going at full speed and turned onto the pavement and drove into people.

“The ambulances and police turned up quickly as people were very quick to call them.”

It has been confirmed that there were 20 injuries and – at the time of writing – four fatalities which includes the attacker.

Phil, who is a Yeovil Town FC supporter and a regular at the Glovers’ away games up in and around the capital, added: “I saw many people who were injured – two were very seriously injured and I couldn’t help a lady who died. She was already dead I think – I just tried to comfort people.”

Phil added: “I’m ok – but you don’t expect to see that happen in front of you that quickly.”
