YEOVIL NEWS: Around 2,000 people from Yeovil ask for invite to Donald Trump to be withdrawn

HUNDREDS of people in the Yeovil constituency have signed a national petition calling on the Government to withdraw an invitation to the new President of the United State of America, Donald Trump, to visit the UK.

Just under 2,000 people in the Yeovil area have joined more than one million others nationwide in signing a petition calling for the State Visit of President Trump to be cancelled.

Yeovil’s Liberal Democrat spokesman, Daisy Benson, said: “The number of people from Yeovil signing this petition in such a short period of time shows that local people are appalled by the actions of US President Donald Trump.

“This has been reflected in the disapproval I hear from residents when I speak to them on the doorstep.

“His actions to ban people based on their religion from entering the US; his comments denigrating women, disabled people and members of the LGBT community fly in the face of British values of openness and tolerance. This country has a long and proud tradition of standing up for injustice and discrimination wherever it finds it.

“For our Prime Minister, Theresa May, to give his actions the approval of the British nation implied in this ceremonial invitation is wrong.

“Theresa May must listen to the people and reverse her Government’s decision to invite Trump to a state visit of the UK.”
