YEOVIL NEWS: Aerospace industry future to be debated in House of Commons

YEOVIL MP Marcus Fysh is taking the future of Somerset’s aerospace industry to the heart of Government with a debate in the House of Commons.

MPs will have the chance to discuss innovative ways of working together to safeguard the industry and the highly skilled jobs it supports in Yeovil and elsewhere during the debate at Westminster Hall on Tuesday (January 24, 2017).

Mr Fysh has already discussed his ideas with the Prime Minister and Greg Clark, the Business, Industry and Energy Minister who is developing a national industrial strategy, and wanted to open the issue up for wider debate.

“I’m working with Government, colleagues and key figures in the aerospace industry to create an exciting, dynamic and competitive environment in Yeovil,” he said.

“It is not about the Government telling companies like Yeovil-based Leonardo what to do, it is about working with them to get the best results that are commercially viable.YEOVIL NEWS: Aerospace industry future to be debated in House of Commons

Mr Fysh has already helped to secure contracts with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) that will safeguard 460 jobs at the Yeovil site.

He is working closely with the Minister for Defence Procurement, Harriett Baldwin MP, to secure orders for the firm’s existing products, Wildcat and Merlin. And he is involved in securing funding for the iAero centre to keep Yeovil at the cutting edge of innovation in the industry.

Mr Fysh added: “I also want to see the aerospace industry open up opportunities to the wider community in Yeovil with the chance for people to gain skills and training and the potential of a rewarding career.”
