BUSINESS: Apprentice success at Jones Building Group

THREE of the apprentices at Yeovil-based Jones Building Group have completed their Level 2 apprenticeships and are looking forward to using their new qualifications on the job – with National Apprentice Week just around the corner.

It is widely reported that the construction industry is facing a skills shortage and without change, a skills crisis.

Training of millennials through apprenticeships is considered to be key to confronting this shortage and a manageable way for SMEs to help make change.

As Jones Building Group gear up for National Apprentice Week in March, the company has been toasting the success of the three of its apprentices on their qualification successes.

James Rolls and James Snell have recently completed their Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations (Construction) – Site Carpentry and will continue to use the skills they have learnt at college when working on the Yarlington Housing Group contract installing new kitchens for residents.

Chris Snell, property services manager at Jones Building Group, said: “Our team focusses heavily on apprentice development and it is an important achievement for James and James to have completed their Level 2 qualification.

“James and James will continue to be supervised as improvers but we look forward to them developing toward operative level in the coming years.”

Meanwhile, Ellie Sibley has completed a Level 2 apprenticeship in Business Administration and is looking forward to enrolling on the Level 3 Diploma with Yeovil College in the coming weeks.

Nicola Telford, marketing and communications manager at Jones Building Group, added: “It is important for companies like Jones Building Group to have an active apprentice intake and encourage young people to reach their potential in the business.

“Ellie has been providing valuable assistance to a number of teams in the company since joining in November 2015; we have seen that her apprenticeship has not only allowed Ellie to test her skills and knowledge but has also increased her confidence.

“Ellie is now looking forward to continuing her studies whilst developing in her role with increased responsibility.”

Jones Building Group currently employ 11 apprentices training in Painting & Decorating; Plumbing; Carpentry; Quantity Surveying and Business Administration.

With National Apprentice Week nearing, the company is planning to engage with all its apprentices through shadowing opportunities, forum discussions, development meetings and other activities. Regular updates will be available on Jones Building Group social media and website.
