YEOVIL NEWS: Fire at residential home in Yeovil

ELDERLY residents at an old folks’ home in Yeovil were evacuated on Sunday (December 4, 2016) as a precaution after fire broke out in the laundry room.

The alarm was raised at 9.20pm to the problem at the home in St Michael’s Avenue and three fire engines from Yeovil and one from Sherborne, along with an incident command unit, were mobilised.

The fire was on the ground floor of the property and deemed to be caused as a result of an accident.

But a Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “The fire resulted in severe smoke and slight fire damage to the laundry room and slight smoke damage to the corridor.”

A precautionary evacuation of residents in the immediate vicinity of the fire was made, but the vast majority of people stayed within their rooms protected by measures already in place.
