YEOVIL NEWS: School in a Bag team opens shop in Quedam

THE School in a Bag charity is opening a pop-up shop in the Quedam Shopping Centre in Yeovil in the run-up to Christmas.

The SIAB, which is based at Chilthorne Domer, has taken on one of the units in the Quedam and will be selling merchandise and Early Bird tickets for next year’s Home Farm Festival.

The charity, which is part of the Piers Simon Appeal, sends off schoolbags packed with everyday school essentials such as pens and paper to children in disadvantaged countries around the world.

The Piers Simon Appeal was first formed following the Boxing Day Asian Tsunami of 2004 which claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.

Among those killed was former Preston School and Yeovil College student Piers Simon, 33, who died after he was swept away by the giant waves when the tsunami struck in Thailand.

The Piers Simon Appeal was launched in his memory to help those lives shattered by the tsunami and out of that came the School in a Bag initiative which has now seen around 75,000 schoolbags distributed around the globe.

The new shop in the Quedam is an exciting new venture for the charity and will help to spread the word more locally about its work. The shop will be open up until Christmas and people can pop in and pack a schoolbag.

The schoolbags cost £20 each, but what they provide poor and orphaned children around the globe is priceless.
