YEOVIL NEWS: New primary school building moves a step closer

MOVES to bring a new school site to Yeovil have taken a huge leap forward following a decision by Somerset County Council’s cabinet group earlier today (Monday, September 26, 2016).

Members unanimously gave Futures for Somerset the green light to build the new 14-class Kingfisher Primary School in Lufton in northwest Yeovil. Futures for Somerset will be responsible for overseeing the school’s development on behalf of the council.

Kingfisher Primary School “opened” with a reception class of 27 pupils this September with all children said to be settling in well. The new school will be hosted on the Huish Primary School site in Yeovil until the new Kingfisher building is ready to move into.

As an academy, its sponsor is the enthusiastic Preston Primary Academy Trust, which also runs Preston Primary School in Yeovil.

Planning permission for the build was agreed in July 2016. The school’s current expected latest completion date is February 2018.

Cllr Frances Nicholson, spokesman for children and families at Somerset County Council, said: “We are investing millions of pounds to meet the pressing need for additional primary school places in this fast-growing part of Yeovil.

“I am very happy about the Cabinet’s decision to take this big step forward for Kingfisher Primary School. We are continuing to work very hard to deliver this much-needed school to the families of Lufton as soon as possible.”

The growing demand for primary school places in Yeovil is due to a rise in local birth rates as well as the impact of new housing developments.
