YEOVIL NEWS: Leonardo Helicopters to close Bunford Bridge

MOTORISTS who use a well-known short cut in Yeovil will soon have to rethink their journey.

Bosses at Leonardo Helicopters – better known as Westlands – have taken the decision to permanently close Bunford Bridge which is owned and maintained by the company.

The bridge will be closed from midnight on Friday, September 30, 2016, to vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.

A company spokesman said: “The decision has been taken due to the ever increasing levels of traffic using the bridge and the private road alongside the airfield as a short cut, resulting in more frequent incidents involving vehicles and pedestrians.”

Leonardo Helicopters will be installing temporary signs today (Monday, September 19, 2016) notifying people of the impending closure and is also notifying Somerset County Council, South Somerset District Council, the emergency services and local businesses of the closure.

After September 30, Bunford Lane, off of the A3088 Cartgate roundabout, will give access only to Garador and Leonardo Helicopters’ Bunford Gate.

Motorists have often used the short cut at peak times of the day to avoid queues of traffic from the Cartgate roundabout to the start of Lysander Road.
