YEOVIL NEWS: New homes replace former car maintenenace depot

A NEW £2.3million development in Yeovil has opened providing 19 affordable rented homes for local people.

The Newcroft Court development, which has been financed by social housing provider Stonewater with funding support from the Homes and Communities Agency, replaces a former car maintenance depot off Goldcroft.

Stonewater has been working with South Somerset District Council and regional contractors Acheson Construction to deliver the scheme, which provides a mix of 12 one- and two-bedroom flats together with seven two-, three- and five-bedroom houses, all for affordable rent.

The Newcroft Court homes have been designed with built-in energy efficiency measures to minimise running costs.YEOVIL NEWS: New homes replace former car maintenenace depot

The houses have fenced, private gardens where children can play safely, and the flats share an enclosed outdoor community space. All the properties have off-road parking.

The development is within easy walking distance of St Gildas Catholic Primary School, the town centre, local shops, public transport and the country park.

“Rising private rents in Yeovil continue to make it very difficult for local people, particularly young families, to find good-quality housing close to their families, local employment and their support networks,” said Phillippa Yeates, development manager for Stonewater.

“Newcroft Court is a great example of a successful partnership with South Somerset District Council and our construction partners, which is not only helping to tackle a housing shortage in the town, but contributing to its long-term sustainability by creating the type of homes local people want, where they want it, at a price they can afford.”

Cllr Ric Pallister, leader of the district council, added: “The use of derelict land close to the town centre is an added bonus and everyone involved in delivering this scheme can be justly proud.”

Newcroft Court is one of several new Stonewater developments in Yeovil. Earlier this year, the housing provider started construction on 24 affordable rental apartments at Queensway Place in the town centre and 60 affordable homes for rent and shared ownership in West Hendford.

Although people have been living at Newcroft Court for the past few months, the "completion event" has only just been held to allow the council, developers, partners and residents to celebrate its opening.
