SCHOOL NEWS: Superb GCSE results reflect “can-do” attitude of Preston students

PRESTON School in Yeovil has been celebrating today (Thursday, August 25, 2016) after its Year 11 students received fantastic GCSE exam results - which rank amongst the highest recorded at the school and a significant improvement on last year’s results.

The exam results were eagerly anticipated after students had worked hard throughout the five years to ensure that they did well in their exams and many students are celebrating getting the results that allow them to progress on to the college courses or apprenticeship of their choice.SCHOOL NEWS: Superb GCSE results reflect “can-do” attitude of Preston students Photo 1

With 65% of students gaining the benchmark of 5 A*-C grades including English and Maths, Preston School is significantly above the national average for this headline measure and one of the top-performing in Somerset.

The school is delighted that yet again it has demonstrated that it not only prepares students well for later life in terms of the experience that they gain whilst at Preston but that they produce academic extremely high outcomes.

Both English and Maths results are significantly above the national average, with 80% of students getting an A*-C grade in English and 78% in Maths.

Schools are increasingly measured by the progress that students make between joining at Year 7 and gaining their GCSE results and it is here where, once again, Preston School has excelled.

The progress that its students made in both English and Maths significantly exceeds the average across the country, with 77% of Year 11 students making at least the expected progress in English and 73% in Maths,

Most students received results which met their target grades and many exceeded the ambitious targets set by the school, which is a credit to their hard work and ‘can-do’ attitude. In addition to English and Maths, there were also pleasing results for other individual subjects with high A*-C pass rates in Science, Geography, History, Languages (French, Italian & Spanish), ICT, Drama, Art, Product Design, Child Development & Religious Education.

Preston School’s principal, Gregg Morrison, said: “We are delighted with this year’s GCSE exam results and especially for the children who have performed so well. We are pleased that so many of our students will now go on to study the course of their choice in the next stage of their life, and we wish them all well.

“Our results will put us as one of the leading schools in Somerset and we are rightly proud of our achievements, as they are under-pinned by a huge amount of hard work by students, staff and families.

“I am delighted with the progress that we have made as a school in my four terms as principal and I look forward to much more future success. As a school we are ambitious and always looking to improve, and we have some innovative plans for the future.
