GLOVERS NEWS: Yeovil Town can be proud of their efforts

YEOVIL Town’s players could hold their heads high last night (Tuesday, August 23, 2016) despite falling to a 4-0 defeat at Premier League giants Everton in the Second Round of the League Cup.

The scoreline may be slightly flattering to the home side as their final two goals came in the last ten minutes of the tie from substitute Arouna Kone.

But up until then Yeovil, of League Two, had really battled well with their more illustrious opponents and it was that extra bit of Premier League quality which shone through come the end.

Everton boss Ronald Koeman fielded a strong team which included Romelu Lukaku, Ross Barkley, Yannick Bolasie, Aaron Lennon and Ashley Williams, while on the bench were the likes of Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka and Kevin Mirallas.

It was Barkley, who was captaining the Everton side, who stood out and the England midfielder looked dangerous every time he got the ball and ran proceedings in the middle of the park.

But Yeovil held firm and each player worked their socks off to frustrate their opponents, but the deadlock was finally broken on 28 minutes when a good Everton move saw Lennon fire home past Glovers keeper Artur Krysiak.

Although Yeovil kept going they did not really trouble Everton keeper Maarten Stekelenburg and they had the stuffing knocked out of them when a Barkley free-kick was slotted home in the 69th minute.

It was a disappointing goal to concede and although Yeovil heads did not drop, it was the moment when any thoughts of a possible cup upset evaporated for the Glovers.

Barkley made way for substitute Kone on 79 minutes and it was not long before the replacement got himself on the scoresheet twice in the closing stages to give Everton a rather unfair handsome final score.

Yeovil’s travelling army of 903 fans sung from the first whistle to the last and gave their team a standing ovation at the end – as did many of the Everton supporters in the overall 24,617 crowd.

Another nice touch from the Evertonians was that they played the Glovers’ song of Yeovil True at the end of the 90 minutes.

Yeovil manager Darren Way said afterwards that he was proud of the players and supporters.

“The boys gave everything and to see the scenes after the game with the supporters was fantastic,” he told the BBC.

“I was proud of the players – really proud. They had to shift left and right and their workload was immense.”
