GOLF: Seniors action from Cricket St Thomas

SIXTY members of the Senior section at Cricket St Thomas Golf Club near Chard took part in the August monthly stableford competition on Monday (August 15, 2016).

Not withstanding the cross winds, two players managed to score better than par, which was a remarkable achievement. The honours in Division 1 went to Chris Basterfield who carded a four under par, 40 points, which proved to be five points ahead of George Willerton who finished in second position.

The accolades of the day, however must go to Division 2 winner, Peter Spencer-Farr with 45 points, beating Dickie Hall into second place by a margin of nine points.

Result: Division 1: 1 Chris Basterfield (40 points); 2 George Willerton (35); 3 Barrie Heath (34). Division 2: 1 Peter Spencer-Farr (45 points); 2 Dickie Hall (36); 3 Nobby Hodder (35).

Fifty-four seniors turned out for the Dave Passmore Memorial trophy on Wednesday (August 17, 2016). The competition took the format of a three man hassle. In the improved conditions, five teams managed to record scores of below 60.

Early starters did well with Roger Stone’s trio leading the field with a net 58.34. Alan Chance then led his team home with the marginally better score of 58.0. This was ultimately beaten by Ken Trussell’s team later in the day, returning an impressive net 56.

The Seniors match team entertained the Seniors of Cannington on Thursday (August 18, 2016), searching for a much needed win. They were not to be disappointed as Captain Nick Hill and partner led off with a win in game one.

Two further wins were recorded meaning that the Saints team could not lose. Game four went the way of the Cannington team, but victory was assured at game five when John Pearce and James Dick halved their game. The icing on the cake came with a win at game six, giving the Saints team victory by 4 1/2 – 1 1/2.

Results: Nick Hill & Keith Potter won by 5 & 4; Roger Stone & Mike Dawson won by 2 & 1; Chris Gingell & Nobby Hodder won by 3 & 2; Neil Critchley & Bryan Frost lost by 4 & 2; John Pearce & James Dick halved; Robin Flower & Barrie Singleton won by 6 & 5.
