LEISURE: Fantastic Yeovil Show gets civic seal of approval

THE return of the Yeovil Show last weekend has been given a big thumbs-up by the 22,000 people who visited including the Mayor of Yeovil himself.

Cllr Darren Shutler, Yeovil Mayor, attended the show on the Saturday (July 16, 2016) with the Mayoress, Anna Shutler, and they were delighted to spend the whole day at the Yeovil Showground meeting people and presenting various prizes.LEISURE: Fantastic Yeovil Show gets civic seal of approval Photo 1

“It was absolutely brilliant,” said the Mayor. “Considering this is the first Yeovil Show for many, many years I think the organisers can be rightly pleased and proud of their achievements.

“There was so much to see and do – it was a fantastic show for the whole family to enjoy. We were there for a whole day and we still didn’t manage to get round and see everything.”

Event director Sam Mackenzie-Green said it had been an “extremely encouraging result” for the show’s first year after a 50-year absence from the Yeovil social calendar.

“What has truly overwhelmed us is the feedback from visitors,” she said.  “We have received 52 five star reviews over the show weekend and these continue to pour in.

“The weather worked very much in our favour.  It was dry virtually throughout and it was a joy to see people sitting outside,  listening to music, picnicking on the grass areas, watching the livestock competitions and arena attractions and really making use of this wonderful Showground that hasn’t had a show of this size and theme for over 50 years.”

Sam added: “The highlight of the show for me was listening to the overwhelming number of positive comments from visitors.LEISURE: Fantastic Yeovil Show gets civic seal of approval Photo 2

“All those we talked to were genuinely bowled over by the scale of the show as well as the amount of attractions on offer to them as part of the ticket entry price.

“I can’t thank our amazing team of show stewards enough.  Their vision, support and determination to make this Show happen has been incredible.  They have given thousands of voluntary hours to planning, preparing the site and running the Show and they deserve a huge amount of credit for what they have achieved.    It has been a privilege to work with such a brilliant team of people.”

Sam continued: “We had tremendous support from our sponsors and have already received fantastic feedback from them.   We also achieved our target of 300 trade stands.

“The first year was, of course, a testing ground for both them and for us.  Some had a fantastic show and are looking forward to booking again for next year.  Others may decide the Yeovil Show is not the right place for them to be.  These are issues that are inevitable with a show of this scale and may take the first two or three years to fine tune.

“It’s been an extremely positive start and we now believe that we are firmly on course to bring the Yeovil Show back to its rightful place – as one of the key events on the Somerset calendar.   We can’t wait to start planning the next one after having a very well deserved month off in August!”

The Show dates for next year have already been confirmed for July 15-16, 2016.
