YEOVIL AREA NEWS: Daisy Benson to fly the LibDem flag

THE Liberal Democrats have selected Daisy Benson as their parliamentary spokesman for the Yeovil constituency area.

Members of the Yeovil constituency LibDems met on Saturday (July 16, 2016) at Stoke-sub-Hamdon to choose the person they want to contest the seat at the next General Election.

And they voted in favour of 37-year-old Ms Benson flying the flag for the party in Yeovil come the election which is scheduled to be held in 2020, but could be sooner following recent events including the EU Referendum and a change in Prime Minister at Westminster.

Miss Benson lives in Misterton and works for a utility company as a stakeholder engagement manager.

“The people of Yeovil constituency have grown used to a strong passionate voice standing up for them in Westminster and locally for three decades in David Laws and Paddy Ashdown,” said Miss Benson. “It is an honour to follow in their footsteps.

“I want to thank local members for their vote of confidence and I’m looking forward to helping the people of Yeovil respond to the challenges ahead of us.”

The Liberal Democrats lost the Yeovil constituency seat – which covers the likes of Yeovil, Ilminster, Chard and Crewkerne - at the 2015 General Election when the Conservative candidate Marcus Fysh sprung a shock victory over the then long-standing MP David Laws.

Mr Laws has today (Monday, July 18, 2016) given his full support to Miss Benson on her selection and future battle in trying to win the seat back for the LibDems.

“I would like to congratulate Daisy on her selection,” he said. “I know her to be a hardworking, energetic campaigner who cares about improving the lives of local people. She has my full support in addressing the pressing issues facing Yeovil.”
