YEOVILTON LIFE: Field gun crew looks to retain title for HMS Heron

DEFENDING Field Gun champions HMS Heron – based at RNAS Yeovilton - are being put through their paces as they attempt to hold onto the prestigious trophy.

The HMS Heron Field Gun Crew will participate in this energised and dramatic competition at HMS Collingwood’s annual open day.

This fast and furious Royal Navy and Royal Marines Field Gun Competition is open to 22 Field Gun crews from across the UK and Gibraltar all contending for the coveted Brickwoods Trophy.

HMS Heron’s crew of 18 made it through to the final after 7 gruelling heats, before competing and winning in the final last year on June 6, 2015.

Last year during qualifying HMS Heron’s crew broke the record during the timed runs with a time of 1.17.69 and went on to cross the line first, regaining the trophy that they last won in 2013.

The competition is a showpiece event at HMS Collingwood’s annual open day and HMS HERON has a rich pedigree in the Field Gun contest winning in 2000, 2002, 2011, 2013 and 2015.

This year’s completion takes place at HMS Collingwood on Saturday 4 June 2016 and everyone at RNAS Yeovilton wishes all taking part the best of Field Gun luck!
