SOMERSET NEWS: Storm Imogen batters the county

SOMERSET County Council’s highways team responded to around 30 reports of fallen trees on Monday (February 8, 2016) as Storm Imogen raged across the county.

This followed the service’s busiest weekend since the 2014 floods with around 200 out-of-hours emergency callouts between Friday night and Monday morning.

Highways have been helping remove fallen trees across the county, inspecting roads and closing and reopening them where needed in liaison with the Police. On Sunday (February 7, 2016) evening highways staff delivered sandbags to CurryRivelPrimary School to help protect it from further flooding.

Cllr David Fothergill, Somerset County Council’s highways and transport spokesman, said: “A big thank you to our highways team for helping keep our roads clear over the past 72 hours.

“The weather has been extremely disruptive but they’ve done a terrific job in responding quickly to help keep drivers safe.”
