SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: New home for Ilminster police

THE neighbourhood policing team in Ilminster will move into a new home early next year.

A new police office will be created at Summervale Surgey in Canal Way and is due to be complete by March.

Spare space at the medical centre will be converted into a neighbourhood policing base complete with lockers, showers, desks and computer equipment, providing everything the team needs to continue policing in Ilminster.

As a result, the current police office in The Butts has been put up for sale.

An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesman said: “We had planned to move the neighbourhood policing team out of the current facility in 2017 but an opportunity to relocate to Summervale Surgery came up sooner.

“The only work the force needs to carry out before the officers can move in is the installation of the IT equipment.

“The neighbourhood team will remain in the current police office until the new facility is ready. Once they have moved into the medical practice, the current police office will be decommissioned. We envisage the move taking place sometime between Christmas and March 2016.

“The move will have no effect on staffing levels or policing in Ilminster.”

Ilminster residents should continue to visit Chard Police Station’s enquiry office to access police services. The 101 phone number and Avon and Somerset Constabulary website can also be used to contact the force about non-urgent matters.
