CHRISTMAS 2015: South Petherton's lit up for the festive season

PEOPLE braved the windy conditions this afternoon (Sunday, November 29, 2015) to enjoy the switching-on of the Christmas lights in the centre of South Petherton to herald the start of the festive countdown in the village.

Hundreds of people were out and about in the bustling village where many of the shops opened for festive shopping, while there were events going on in places such as the Blake Hall, the David Hall arts centre and in the church, plus dancing in The Square.

Members of the Stoke Silver Band sheltered inside one of the shops in The Square where they played Christmas favourites, while star guests were three-year-old Comet and Winter, aged 18 months, from Somerset Reindeer Hire based at Chilthorne Domer, who were big attractions in the churchyard.

The Brewers Arms pub was – as always – a hive of activity with live music in the courtyard, a craft fair inside and Father Christmas could be found in his grotto in the skittles alley along with mulled wine and cider, while there was also food to be enjoyed.

It was left to a giant Olaf – from the hit Disney animated film Frozen – to do the honours and press the plunger which illuminated South Petherton with its Christmas lights.

Olaf and a colourful Minion - who had posed for photos during the afternoon with children and adults - then led a parade through the village where children carried lanterns.
