CHRISTMAS 2015: Lights going on in memory of Ilminster supporters

NEW garlands of lights will be switched-on in Ilminster on Friday (November 27, 2015) in memory of three big supporters of the Ilminster Christmas festivities who have passed away.

Ken Harper, Viv Joslyn and Ronnie McQueen loved the Christmas lights and Victorian Evening and now they will be twinkling in the town over the festive period.

Lights in memory of Ken will be in East Street, while for Viv they will be at the bottom of North Street and in a new display at the Royal Oak pub in Ditton Street, while there will be some in memory of Ronnie, a former lights committee member, across the entrance of Ditton Street.

A new garland has also been put up in the Swan Precinct, plus large snowflakes along the lights garland on Strawberry Bank.

Nearly all of the lights now reflect the move over to LED by the lights committee. As the older, coloured characters have become worn out it has not been possible o replace them so inevitably new features will be in LED, with the benefit that they are cheaper to run.

The lights will officially be switched-on at 7pm on Friday (November 27) as part of the Victorian Evening.

Attractions on the night will include three bands, with a Victorian Games Fair at The Green House on the corner at the far end of Silver Street.

There will also be hot food and drinks stalls, and this year try out the fabulous crepes.
