SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Remembering the fallen

THE ceremonial Armistice Day commemoration will be observed once again outside the Guildhall in Chard next month.

There will be a two-minute silence at 11am on Wednesday, November 11, 2015, to signify the moment back in 1918 when the guns fell silent to signal the end of the First World War.

A Chard Town Council spokesman said: “The silence is meant as a tribute to those who lost their lives fighting for their country through two World Wars and many subsequent conflicts.

“People are invited to join with the Mayor, Cllr Dave Bulmer, along with councillors, war veterans and representatives from the Armed Forces to mark the event.”

After the two minute silence refreshments will be available in the auditorium of the Guildhall from 11.15am onwards.

A number of local groups will be joining the Mayor in commemorating the event by providing music and singing with some of the famous war time songs.

Remembrance Sunday this year is on Sunday, November 8, 2015.
