LEISURE: New community choir being formed in Chard

A NEW choir is to be formed in Chard following a successful Singing for Pleasure day held at Holyrood Academy earlier this moth.

More than 40 enthusiastic singers attended the day with most having come from the local area, although some had travelled from all over the South West.

Trevor Lloyd Jones, the conductor, was delighted with the day and has inspired him to set-up a regular choir based at Holyrood.

“It’s great that singing is alive and kicking in Chard and that there is such a strong appetite for more,” he said.

The choir will meet on Wednesday evenings and will run from 7.30pm to 9.30pm with a coffee break.

“It was fantastic for the group to be producing such a pleasing, confident sound in such a short time at the Singing for Pleasure day,” he said. “What potential.”

Some singers had experience of singing and others were complete beginners. Many have children in the Holyrood Academy Choir also run by Trevor Lloyd Jones and were thrilled to have the opportunity to have a go at singing themselves.

The day was made up of a variety of music with something for all tastes. The day began with a fun warm up to get the voices really ready for a full day of singing and was followed by a couple of rounds to introduce the group to singing in parts.  This included a piece Trevor Lloyd Jones had written especially for the day.

Elements of music theory were interspersed throughout the day to enable the singers to begin sight singing straight from the music.

The singers were introduced to a 16th century work in four parts written in Latin followed after by a four-part piece by Michael Haydn also in Latin. Towards the end of the day the choir worked on two well known 60s hits, and after tea and cake the choir sang everything again - just for fun!
