YEOVIL NEWS: Music night hits right note for School in a Bag
A CHARITY music night at the Beach Café Bar in Yeovil last night (Friday, July 3, 2015) was a big success and raised more than £300 for the School in a Bag project.
The event was organised by Steve Sowden, of the Yeovil Press, as part of his fundraising for his forthcoming Three Peaks Challenge on behalf of the SIAB which is part of the Piers Simon Appeal.
Music was performed by solo singer Tammie Lloyd and then local band The Disciples led by twins Andy and Stuart Smith who were among Steve’s best mates at school.
Steve and the Smith brothers were in the same house group as Piers Simon at Preston School in Yeovil from 1982-87. Piers was among the victims of the horrific Asian tsunami of Boxing Day 2004 – he was aged just 33.

A raffle last night helped to coin in the cash for Steve who is hoping to raise as much money as he can for the charity by taking part in the Three Peaks Challenge from August 11-15, 2015, which will see him walk up the highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales – Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis and Mount Snowdon.
The music night has helped to kick-off his fundraising by a total of £307.05 – although he is hoping to raise more through sponsorship and he has set up a Just Giving fundraising page at https://www.justgiving.com/Steve-Sowden .
“I would like to thank everyone who came along to the Beach Café Bar last night for the music night,” said Steve. “It was a great success – much better than I was expecting.
“I obviously need to thank Tammie and The Disciples for performing and to Kerry and Jim at the Beach Café Bar for hosting the event.”
Steve would also like to thank those who donated raffle prizes – the Brewers Arms at South Petherton, Yeovil Press, School in a Bag, the Beach Cafe Bar and Steve’s parents.
There is now talk of the Beach Café Bar holding another charity music event later in the year in aid of School in a Bag.
The School in a Bag initiative sees children across the globe receive a rucksack with everyday items which we would take for granted but are a lifeline for so many disadvantaged youngsters.
