YEOVIL NEWS: Music night at the Beach Cafe Bar in aid of School in a Bag

FUNDS for the School in a Bag charity will be boosted on Friday (July 3) when a music night is held at the Beach Café Bar in Yeovil.

There will be live music with singer Tammie Lloyd, well-known locally for her work with the Castaway Theatre Group, and then sounds from across the decades with the ever-popular local band The Disciples.YEOVIL NEWS: Music night at the Beach Cafe Bar in aid of School in a Bag

It is all part of the fundraising being carried out by journalist Steve Sowden, of the Yeovil Press news and leisure website, who will be attempting the Three Peaks Challenge for the School in a Bag charity in August.

The School in a Bag initiative – which sees children across the globe receive a rucksack with everyday items which we would take for granted but are a lifeline for so many disadvantaged youngsters – was created from the Piers Simon Appeal based at Chilthorne Domer.

The PSA was formed following the tragic death of former Yeovil College and Preston School student Piers Simon, aged 33, who died in the Asian tsunami of Boxing Day 2004.

Steve was in the same year group as Piers at Preston and covered the story of his former school friend’s death while working on the former Yeovil Express free newspaper.

A few years ago Steve raised nearly £500 for the PSA and SIAB after successfully giving up smoking for 12 months – he has now gone three-and-a-half years since quitting the habit.

Now he is hoping to raise more money for the charity, which he has supported since it first started, by tackling the Three Peaks Challenge – walking up Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England and Mt Snowdon in Wales.

“The fundraising night at the Beach Café Bar should be a lot of fun,” said Steve. “It is FREE to come in, but all donations would be most welcome for this great charity.YEOVIL NEWS: Music night at the Beach Cafe Bar in aid of School in a Bag

“It is ten years now since the awful events of Boxing Day 2004 and the work that the charity has done has been fantastic in memory of Piers."

The Disciples are led by twins Stuart and Andy Smith, well-known for their involvement with Westland Sports FC, and they too were former classmates of Piers Simon at Preston School.

As well as the music there will be a rodeo bull – courtesy of the Fun Zone team – and a barbecue for people to enjoy.

All the fun should be happening from around 7pm.

The Yeovil Press recently supported the Lloyd Lounge stage at the Home Farm Fest at Chilthorne Domer – the main money-raiser of the year for the PSA and SIAB charity.
