YEOVIL NEWS: It’s ok to ask campaign at Tesco Extra

THE clinical research team at Yeovil District Hospital headed to the Tesco Extra store in town last week for International Clinical Trials Day.

Staff set up a stand in the supermarket last Wednesday (May 20, 2015) to launch the “it’s ok to ask” campaign, encouraging people to ask about clinical research and the trials currently open at the hospital.

The campaign is aimed at encouraging patients and their carers to ask their doctors about clinical research and whether it is right for them.YEOVIL NEWS: It’s ok to ask campaign at Tesco Extra

Paediatric clinical research nurse, Joanne Rendall said: “Here at Yeovil we have an active research culture which really benefits our patients.

“The department has been running for 20 years and has grown from running only three studies with a handful of patients to 120 studies open at any one time and recruiting 750 patients per year. For a small hospital, this is far above expected and demonstrates a really active research ethos from all clinical teams.

“The team is keen for the public to know what we are doing and to ensure that eligible patients are offered the opportunity to consider a study and should ask their clinical team what research is running that they might be able to participate in.”

The clinical research unit hosts all types of studies from simple blood tests and questionnaires, to drug and device studies. This includes studies in cancer, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, surgery, orthopaedics, heart disease, children’s care and stroke.

To find out what research studies are being run, please contact the clinical research department on extension 4559.
