SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Firefighters battle barn blaze

FIREFIGHTERS from across South Somerset have been dealing with a barn fire this evening (Thursday, April 30, 2015) at Norton-sub-Hamdon.

The alarm was raised at just after 5pm to the incident in the Barn Orchard area of Norton after receiving several calls from members of the public.

Three fire engines from Martock, Crewkerne and Chard were mobilised along with a water bowser from Yeovil.

A further three fire engines were called for from Yeovil and Ilminster, while an incident command unit was summonsed from Street.

A spokesman for the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: “The incident commander confirmed that this was a four-bay barn containing hay and straw well alight.”

By 8pm the firefighters were making good progress removing contents from the barn and confirmed that the fire had been caused by “accidental ignition.”

Electricity board engineers were called out to isolate high voltage cables running to the building, while firefighters concentrated for a while on one section of the blaze to protect a nearby thatched property.

More details to follow.
