GLOVERS NEWS: Paul Sturrock suffers first defeat as Yeovil Town boss

YEOVIL Town’s final home game of the 2014-15 season in the Sky Bet League One season ended in disappointing fashion with a 2-1 defeat this afternoon (Saturday, April 25, 2015) against Port Vale.

It was the first taste of defeat for Paul Sturrock since taking over the manager’s job at Huish Park earlier this month.

Tom Pope gave Port Vale an early 13th minute lead, just moments after Yeovil had to replace Sam Foley due to injury.

Yeovil got back on level terms with just ten minutes remaining when Gozie Ugwu netted from close range.GLOVERS NEWS: Paul Sturrock suffers first defeat as Yeovil Town boss

There were hopes that Yeovil – already destined to finish bottom of the table and with it relegation to League Two – would go on to make it three successive wins in the closing moments of the match.

But the opposite happened when no sooner had Yeovil equalised, Port Vale regained the initiative when Michael Brown scored from close range on 82 minutes.

Yeovil nearly gained a share of the spoils deep into injury time when Ugwu hit the woodwork with another effort.

Results from elsewhere around the League One set-up means that it will go down to the final games of the season to determine who will be joining Yeovil in League Two next season – three out of Colchester United, Leyton Orient, Crawley and Notts County.

At the other end of the table Preston North End and MK Dons will go into the final day next Sunday (May 3, 2015) vying for the second promotion spot behind champions Bristol City.

Preston travel to relegation-threatened Colchester, while Yeovil visit MK Dons.

Next season Yeovil will not be facing Tranmere Rovers or Cheltenham Town with both teams relegated to the Conference.

Burton Albion and Shrewsbury are promoted from League Two to League One with the other place automatic going to either Southend United or Bury.
