YEOVIL NEWS: Clamping down on unofficial free car park

PARKING restrictions are set to be introduced to stop town centre workers from using a residential street as an unofficial free car park in Yeovil.

Residents in Willow Road, which can be found off of Preston Road, are fed-up with people parking outside their homes during the week and then wandering off to town for work rather than avoid using the official council-run car parks.

They have compiled a petition and have submitted it to Somerset County Council’s highways department asking for something to be done to alleviate the problems caused by parked cars on the roadside.

Yeovil Town Council’s buildings and civic matters committee will discuss the situation at its meeting tonight (Tuesday, March 24, 2015).YEOVIL NEWS: Clamping down on unofficial free car park

Assistant town clerk Sally Freemantle, speaking in a report, said: “It has been brought to the council’s attention that the residents of Willow Road are experiencing problems with vehicles parking inconsiderately on the road preventing residents from driving in and out of their driveways.

“It is alleged that some drivers are leaving their vehicles on Willow Road while they go to work for the day.”

Highways officers have suggested that a two-hour maximum parking restriction between the hours of 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday, be introduced.

“This would be in line with parking restrictions on other local roads which have been introduced due to similar problems,” added the report.
