YEOVIL NEWS: End of the record is approaching for Acorn Music

THE end is in sight now for one of the most well-known names in Yeovil town centre – Acorn Music.

The long-standing music shop in Glovers Walk will close for the final time on Easter Saturday, April 4, 2015, and it is expected it will go out with a song and a dance with a number of great local musicians playing at the premises throughout the day.YEOVIL NEWS: End of the record is approaching for Acorn Music

It will be the end of an era for Yeovil as the shop – which started life as Acorn Records – was first established in small premises in Princes Street in 1973.

The business moved to its current site in Glovers Walk in 1975 and has been trading there now for a whopping 40 years.

With the changing face of music down the years and with the introduction of CDs, Acorn Records moved with the times and became Acorn Music – but the one thing which has not changed…..the huge selection of music available at the shop to suit all musical tastes.YEOVIL NEWS: End of the record is approaching for Acorn Music

There are plenty of bargains to be had at Acorn Music in the final few weeks of trading and owner Chris Lowe, who is looking forward to his well-earned retirement, would welcome everyone to come along and see if they can find something for them.

Chris says that he has had a lot of people coming into the shop to wish him well ever since it was first announced that Acorn Music would be closing.

“People have been very kind,” he said. “I don’t really want to make a big thing about closing and I don’t really want to start reminiscing too much, but just to say that I’ve really enjoyed it and will be sad come April 4, but now is the right time to go.”

While Chris might not want to get too sentimental about the imminent closure of one of Yeovil’s most well-known shops – many people locally will be with it being the place where lots of music-lovers bought their first record.

And for the record – the Yeovil Press’ Steve Sowden bought his first single from Acorn Records back in 1981: Do The Hucklebuck by Coast to Coast! What was the first record you bought? Write to us via email at yeovilpress@gmail.com .
