SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES: Bruton girls are eco ambassadors

SCHOOL NEWS: Bruton girls are eco ambassadors

THE Bruton School for Girls is the only secondary school in England and one of only two schools in the South West to have been awarded the prestigious role of Eco-Schools Ambassador for 2015-2017.

Eco-Schools is the largest Education for Sustainability programme in the world and is run by the Keep Britain Tidy organisation.

In total, just nine schools across England were selected which demonstrates how tough it is to qualify and be selected. BSG has now received the award twice, having first won for the 2013-2015 awards.

Learning development co-ordinator at Bruton School for Girls, Laura James, who led the submission, said: “We are so thrilled to have been successfully selected again.

“We firmly believe in going the extra mile to demonstrate that sustainability is core to our school’s culture. The whole initiative helps and inspires girls right through the school.”

Dr Morgan Phillips, education manager for Eco-Schools, added: “The quality of the applications received this year were extremely high. It was great to assess them and learn about the brilliant approaches staff and pupils are taking to Education for Sustainability across the country.

“Bruton School for Girls will be helping schools and children in their local area to benefit through the Eco-Schools programme, and we look forward to working with them as they do.”

Other Eco-Schools are in Tameside, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Surrey, Suffolk, Avon, West Sussex, North Yorkshire and Bedfordshire.
