SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Funding for football play The Giants

COUNCIL chiefs are definitely on the ball after awarding a grant to help a theatre company tour with a new play based on youth football with a link to Yeovil Town FC.

South Somerset District Council’s arts and entertainment service has supported the recently formed ‘Wassail Theatre’ company with a grant of £250 to help tour their new play entitled The Giants.

The Giants is a footballing drama set in the competitive world of school football, as an under-12s team sets out to win the Somerset Schools’ Cup.

The play has been produced by Nick White, a theatre practitioner from Yeovil, who has worked extensively across the West Country. He has recently returned to live in West Coker and to set up a small independent company, Wassail Theatre.SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Funding for football play The Giants

Wassail Theatre’s aim is to make theatrical works that are inspired by people and places in Somerset. Their first production - The Giants - is a nod to Yeovil Town FC and sees the lead character Warren, following his role model Gary Johnson, as he manages the Under-12s football team.

The council’s leisure and culture spokesman, Cllr Sylvia Seal, said: “We are pleased to support this young theatre company, particularly as their work celebrates our communities and local heritage.

“Touring the work to unusual venues here in South Somerset adds to the range of places where our communities can enjoy the arts.”

Wassail Theatre will be touring the production from January to various venues in Somerset and Dorset, including the David Hall at South Petherton and Yeovil Town Football Club’s Huish Park stadium.

Two lucky fans will be given the opportunity to win a whole performance of the play in their front room by answering this simple question: Which current Premier League (then playing in the old First Division) team did Yeovil famously beat 2-1 in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup in 1949?
