The incident in St   George’s Avenue on Saturday (December 20, 2014) night could have resulted in serious injuries if the fire had not been discovered in time and showed the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home.

Five people in total escaped the fire, which was cooking-related and caused severe damage to the kitchen of the home. Two appliances from Yeovil were called to the incident at just before 11pm and extinguished the fire.

Incident Commander Rob Radley, of Yeovil Fire Station, said: “Our crews responded rapidly to the property and treated the family of four as well as extinguishing the fire.

“This fire was preventable and we want to work with our communities to provide them with free safety advice that will not take much of their time but will prevent situations such as this occurring again.”

In a separate incident, three adults and a child were treated for smoke inhalation following a fire involving a tumble drier this morning (22 December) in Glanvill Road, Street.

The incidents highlight the need for residents to take extra care during the festive period.

Fire statistics show that in December, 20 people a day are either killed or injured in accidental fires in the home in England. In December 2013, there were around 2,700 accidental fires in the home in England – more than any other month of the year.

While fire safety is important throughout the year, the extra distractions of Christmas make it especially important to be vigilant during the festive season.
