YEOVIL NEWS: We've done it! Hospital wins People's Millions contest!

YEOVIL District Hospital has been celebrating this evening (Wednesday, November 26, 2014) after getting the news it wanted – it has been successful in winning nearly £50,000 in a national TV competition for lottery funds.

The hospital has been successful in the People’s Millions competition and gained £49,020 which will be used to build an innovative dementia friendly garden.

But it could not happen without the support and votes of YOU – people living in Yeovil and surrounding area.YEOVIL NEWS: We've done it! Hospital wins People's Millions contest!

The People’s Millions is a partnership between ITV and the Big Lottery Fund in which telephone voting from the public helps decide which local community projects receive up to £50,000 of National Lottery funding.

Large numbers of patients with dementia will spend weeks in hospital and are unable to enjoy any time outside due to the complex nature of their condition, and the difficulties of ensuring their safety away from a ward.

However, research shows that being outside and being able to undertake some physical exercise can help to maintain normal sleeping patterns and daily rhythms, improve a person’s sense of wellbeing, and help to relieve distress.

But now – thanks to the People’s Millions – Yeovil District Hospital will be able to provide this important extra facility for people with dementia.

Becky Gale, speaking on the hospital campaign’s Facebook page, said: “Huge thank you from all at Yeovil District Hospital.

“We could not have done it without the support of you all.”

And hospital fundraiser Sarah Cherry added: “Woo-hoo – thank you to everyone who voted and made it possible.”
