SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Work to stop flooding in Ilchester

YEOVIL MP David Laws has today (Thursday, October 23, 2014) welcomed the Environment Agency’s announcement that they will soon begin work to help prevent flooding in Ilchester.

As a result of the bad weather last winter, water flooded in the area around The Mead and over the A303 itself, causing residents real distress.

The flooding risk is heightened because water was able to bypass the penstock and threaten houses in The Mead.

The Environment Agency will now begin work to repair the penstock headwall and the culvert which will aim to prevent water bypassing the structure in the future and so protect the houses in Ilchester from future flooding.

Work is scheduled to begin on site this week and is expected to be completed within four weeks.

Mr Laws said: “It has taken far too long for this problem to be addressed, but I am pleased that the Environment Agency are now beginning works which should help to protect residents in Ilchester from flooding.

“I have spent a number of months pressing the Environment Agency to take action and confront the issue. These repair works will not solve all the problems, but they are an important start.”

Mr Laws added: “However, further action is needed to reduce flood risks in the area and I will go on pressing the Environment Agency and Highways Agency for action.”
