SOMERSET NEWS: Eleven people need medical help after flat fire

ELEVEN people needed medical assistance yesterday (Sunday, September 14, 2014) after getting caught up in a fire at a flat in Somerset.

Firefighters were first mobilised to the problem at Gorehedge in Frome when alarms were heard activating at just before 6pm.

One fire engine from Frome was initially called out and officers quickly asked for a further crew to attend, along with an ambulance.

A spokesman for the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service told the Yeovil Press: “One male casualty was rescued from the property. He was conveyed to hospital with smoke inhalation and burns.”

But the spokesman added: “There was a total of 11 casualties who were assessed on scene by the Ambulance Service.”

Two further fire engines attended from Warminster in neighbouring Wiltshire, while an incident command unit from Street and an aerial platform from Yeovil were also mobilised.

The fire caused 70 per cent fire damage and 100 per smoke damage to the flat involved, plus 70 per cent smoke damage to the surrounding corridors.

The Fire Service spokesman added: “The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
