YEOVIL NEWS: Slimmers do Race for Life

YEOVIL slimmers are preparing to hold a five-mile Slimming World does Race for Life event to raise money for a leading cancer charity and are calling for local volunteers to take part and join them.

The 60 women and men, who are all members of Shelley Lawrence’s Slimming World groups, will be holding their own event at Park House on September 7 at 12.30pm to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

The organisation is Slimming World’s charity partner for 2014 through its fundraising arm SMILES - Slimmers Making It a Little Easier for Someone.YEOVIL NEWS: Slimmers do Race for Life

The group is welcoming anyone in Yeovil to join in, whether it’s taking part or watching, and help them to raise as much money as possible for the charity.

The Yeovil group’s race is part of a national event running across all Slimming World groups throughout the summer.

The race is not competitive, and those taking part can choose the distance they’d like to cover – 1km, 3km, 5km or more – and can run, walk, cycle or skate across the finish line, whatever form of activity they love to do.

Shelley Lawrence who runs the Yeovil Slimming World group every week at Park House, says her members are really looking forward to the Slimming World does Race for Life event.

“We’d love anyone in Yeovil to join us whether they’re young, old, male or female and whatever their current fitness level,” she said.

“Anyone who wants to take part can run, walk or even dance the distance – as long as they cross the finish line we don’t mind! Hopefully the event will show people just how motivating being part of a group like ours can be.”

Consultant Shelley, who has lost an incredible nine-and-a-half stone and maintained weight for over five years, will be walking five miles in memory of her mum Norma Lawrence who sadly lost her battle with breast cancer in December 2013.YEOVIL NEWS: Slimmers do Race for Life

“It’s a cause close to my heart and I’m sure it will be a very touching event,” she said.

“I used to really struggle with exercise, and found it really daunting taking those first steps to becoming more active.

“With Slimming World I learnt that the key is to start small and find something that you enjoy, and I’ve found that to be the best way to keep active and lose weight at the same time.

“There’s no rule that says being active has to involve a gym or running shorts – walking to collect my children from school or hitting the dance floor on a night out is enough to compliment my weight loss beautifully.

“I definitely wouldn’t have entered a distance race before I found Slimming World, but since losing weight I’m feeling much healthier, happier and more confident – I can’t wait for this event.”
