A-Levels open up a variety of progression routes, including university, work or Apprenticeships.  This year, over 250 Yeovil College A-Level and vocational students applied to universities including top Russell Group members  Bristol, Exeter, Cardiff, Nottingham, Birmingham, Southampton, Sheffield, Warwick and Liverpool, as well as King’s College London and Imperial College London.  More Yeovil College students than ever secured their first choice place.

The students also applied to the University Centre Yeovil, which offers a range of degrees and other Higher Education (HE) qualifications at a campus on Preston Road.  The University Centre Yeovil is a partnership between Yeovil College, Bournemouth University, the University of the West of England, the University of Gloucestershire and the University of Wales Trinity St David which aims to increase access to HE in South Somerset.

Former Preston Academy student Jade Kanaka, 18, of Yeovil, chose an Apprenticeship and has gained a role with leading international financial services firm JP Morgan.

Jade said: “I knew I wanted a career in Finance, but was worried about the debt from going to university.  In the end, I decided I’d rather be learning and earning!

“University is definitely not your only route following A-Levels.  Every day there have been increasing numbers of apprenticeships I could’ve applied for.

“YeovilCollege has been fab.  The lecturers are very supportive and the overall feel of the place is good.”

Jade achieved an A grade in Accounting, B in Business and C in Maths.  She also received an A for her EPQ.

Chloe Renwick, 19, of Yeovil is also progressing to an Apprenticeship with a prestigious global company, Rolls Royce.

Former Gryphon School student Chloe achieved an A* in Business, A in Accounting, C in Maths and a B for her EPQ.

She said “I didn’t fancy uni.  I’d been to visit and it simply didn’t seem my cup of tea.  Also, I want to be an accountant, so I would still need to do qualifications afterwards anyway, so I decided an Apprenticeship would make more sense.  Apprenticeships give you experience and qualifications.

“I think it’s complete rubbish when people say that you have to go to university if you do A-Levels. There are so many Apprenticeships to choose from and they help you get experience and qualifications.”
