FIRST WORLD WAR 100: Candlelight vigil in Yeovil town centre

PEOPLE are being invited to attend a candlelight vigil tonight (Monday, August 4, 2014) at the war memorial in Yeovil town centre.

One hundred years ago at 11pm on August 4, 1914, Britain declared itself at war with Germany to signal the start of one of the darkest periods in our history.

On the eve of that historic occasion the then British Foreign Secretary, Sir Edward Grey, said: “The lamps are going out all over Europe – we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.”FIRST WORLD WAR 100: Candlelight vigil in Yeovil town centre

In commemoration people are being invited to take part in Lights Out – a UK-wide event that asks everyone to turn off their lights from 10pm to 11pm tonight (Monday, August 4, 2014) and leaving on a single light or candle for a shared moment of reflection.

As part of the event a vigial will be held at the War Memorial in the Borough area of Yeovil town centre and everyone is welcome to attend.

A limited edition centenary candle is available from M&S stores or online for £4 – with all profits going to the Royal British Legion.

It is hoped that one million candles across the UK to remember each and every one of those servicemen and women who gave their lives in the war to end all wars.

A spokesman for the Royal British Legion said: “Please join together to create a unique national moment for the UK and the Royal British Legion.

“This really is a time of reflection for all who lost their lives and also the families and relatives left behind.”
